Street photography hasn’t been my style in the past. While I’ve taken a few street-style shots here and there and explored urban landscapes, I often found myself waiting for scenes to clear of people or using techniques like long exposures to blur people out.
My working trips to Paris this year [2024] has suddenly triggered something new. I gained confidence in taking travel street photos and returned home to plan a short trip (or two) to London, just an hour or so from home. The assignment was to walk around Covent Garden, Soho and China Town areas having done a little research on where to go for the best images.
The first tip to Paris really ignited my enthusiasm for this style but I was only armed with an iPhone. However I know how to use the features of the phone, I understand its limitations and how to get the best. I returned to Paris with my Digital SLR - the D7000, it's 10 years old - but a very capable camera none-the-less. For the London trip I dusted down my Lumix GF1. Again old camera and needs some tech know how to get the best from this camera.
But the camera is not important. It's the connection with subject and the environment. I'm looking for shape, light, contrast, composition and for the first time in my photography, a short story. A short story in one image.
